Science Educators’ Association of the Australian Capital Territory

Hands-on Climate Connections: demonstrations, activities and tinkering for climate and energy education

Presented by Dr Graham Walker, Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, ANU

This FREE TQI accredited workshop will explore hands-on approaches to teaching climate change and energy production.

For effective responses to climate change on the local or global level, inspirational and motivational teaching approaches are needed – student-centred, hands-on pedagogies that promote agency and embed problem solving have huge potential. Participants will explore key issues in teaching and communicating about climate change, then try a selection of hands-on activities including creative ‘tinkering’ methodologies. You might make a wearable wind turbine, fire a gas-powered marshmallow bazooka, or make hydrogen fuel using HB pencils! Teachers will receive some goodies to take back to classrooms, however the hands-on activities have been designed to use primarily common everyday items to improve accessibility and relevance.

A teacher resource booklet containing 18 activities (some will be sampled in the workshop) can be downloaded at http://hdl.handle.net/1885/289738.  A booklet tailored to the ACT will be created for/during the workshops and made available… we would love your input!

This ANU Centre for the Public Awareness of Science community engagement project is presented with assistance from the ACT Government under the Community Zero Emissions Grants Program. Participants also have the option to take part in an associated ANU research project to better understand the impact of the activities and how they can best be adapted to local contexts.
