Behind the Scenes Tour of the Pyrotron
We are delighted to be hosting our end of year gathering at CSIRO’s Pyrotron: the National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory.
As the increasing impact of wildfires are being felt around the globe, this state of the art facilities is where scientists and engineers are working to understand bushfire behaviour and helping protect communities and fire crews during outbreaks.
The Pyrotron is a 29 meter long combustion wind tunnel – one of two in the world – that helps researchers study fires in a safe and controlled environment. Their research data is then passed on to engineers to create technologies to mitigate the fires – from satellites, to drones, to ground sensors.
Whether you are a primary or secondary teacher, this facility is a ‘must see’ to experience how science is a human endeavour that requires all disciplines to understand the chemical composition of combustible materials through spectral analysis, understand the ecological implications of such disasters and to predict the rate of spread under different conditions. Even King Charles III was treated to the same behind the scenes tour – one that you should not miss!
